Title:  FRUIT BASKET

Instructor:  Laraine Short

Description:  This fun fruit basket was painted with Genesis Oils.  These paints are heat set so we will dry it as we paint and there is no odor.

Cost of class:  $39

Instructor will furnish:  I will supply gourd, instructions and all painting supplies.

Student needs to bring:  A smiling face.

Maximum # of students:  12

Title:  SOMETHING BUGGY

Instructor:  Marianne Barnes

Description:  Using gourd pieces to make bugs, dragon flies, etc.  Iridescent and metallic paints make them “pop”.  Add a pin and you have a decorative piece.

Cost of class:  $30

Instructor will furnish:  Everything except wood-burners.  Instructor has 2 extra wood-burners to share.

Student needs to bring:  Either a wood-burner or black permanent fine tip marker.

Maximum # of students:  15

Minimum # of students: 4

Title:  JUST A SWEET GOURD BASKET

Instructor:  Debbie Wilson

Description:  Woven on dyed gourd base with 3 different weaves, this gourd basket is only about 8 1/2 inches tall  with the cane wrapped handle. The lid is finished off with a woven border and reed or embellishment handle. Colors will be a variety of greens, teals, and smoked reed.

Cost of class:  $35

Instructor will furnish: I will furnish all reeds, cane, dyed and drilled gourds and an instructional pamphlet.

Student needs to bring:  An awl, scissors or reed clippers, clothes pins, water bucket, old towel or something to keep gourd from sliding.

Maximum # of students: 8

CLASS FULL

Title:  FRIENDLY FROGS—PEN & INK

Instructor:  Fonda Haddad

Description:  Pen and Ink is an ideal medium for gourds because of the simplicity of tools and the fact it brings out the patterning of the gourd.  We will use a clean whole or bowl cut gourd and trace a pattern.  With several pens, we will outline the picture and use shading techniques of negative space, stipple, contour and crossed lines.  The rim may be left plain or covered with a twisted coil.

Cost of class:  $45

Instructor will furnish:  Everything needed for this class (gourd, pattern, graphite paper, colored pencils,cordage, artist pen sets ($6 value) and fixative).

Student needs to bring:  You may like to have an apron and soft rags.

Title:  FALL FANTASY     

Instructor: Judi Besier

Description:  This project is done using acrylic paints, stamps, cookie cutters, air dry clay, and your imagination.

CLASS FULL.

Title:  WOOD-BURNING LEAVES & FEATHERS

Instructor:  Kathy James

Description:  Great class for beginners and intermediate pyrographers, alike. Learn some basics, practice useful techniques, try PyroPaper leaves or feathers, then learn the more difficult task of creating small feathers/leaves with every barb/vein free-handed. Much fun! At this price, you can afford to leave the class early if it gets too hard for your eyesight or your interest level. Helpful color handouts and extra PyroPaper designs provided.

Cost of class: $25

Instructor will furnish:  PyroPaper, several handouts,  pencils, scissors, sharpeners etc. for use in class, extra PyroPaper designs for future use.

Student needs to bring:  A woodburner with adjustable heat (Detail Master, Burnmaster, Razertip, Colwood) and a blade-like tip (spade or skew, not scribe or ball). A gourd of any size and shape, clean and ready to wood-burn.  No dye or finish, please.  Optional:  task lamp or magnifier if you wish.

Title:  CORDAGE MAKING/TRIMMING A GOURD WITH NATURAL MATERIALS

Instructor:  Nancy Gildersleeve

Description:  Learn the ancient art of cordage (rope) making using corn shucks, day lily leaves, yucca and other fibers.  Trim a small gourd with your cord and other natural materials.

Cost of class:  $30

Instructor will furnish:  Everything needed to make cordage, sewing supplies and a small gourd bowl.

Student needs to bring:  Small container for soaking materials, small old terry towel.  Bring any dried long leaf material you’d like to try to make cord from, any naturals you would like to use for trimming your gourd.

Maximum # of students:  10

Title:  RIVER BED GOURD

Instructor:  Bonnie Gibson

Description:  Learn how to recess an area to create a “river bed” gourd.  Add decorative “bubble” holes and add some small pebbles to complete the effect. If there is time, you can try some patina paint.

Cost of class:  $45

Instructor will furnish:  Carving burs and some tools will be available for purchase at class if desired.

Student needs to bring:  Students should bring a dremel, Foredom or other similar rotary tool and any burs you have on hand.  Bring a small gourd (5-6”) and a good quality dust mask.

Title:   GEOMETRIC THREAD DESIGN ON GOURDS

CLASS FULL

Instructors:  Jan Robinson & Kari Waltz

Description:  Experience three techniques in one class!  Students will learn to make designs on a gourd using sets of points and colored threads to create an impressive geometric decoration.  Also, students will weave a pine straw rim and decoupage the interior for the finished piece.  These processes are easy enough for the novice, yet intriguing for the veteran gourdhead.  We plan to have a handout and CD containing separate photos and step by step directions/photos on a Power/Point document for students to take home.

Cost of class:  $35

Instructor will furnish:  All supplies to complete the project.

Student needs to bring:  A tool for punching/drilling small holes in a gourd.

Maximum # of students:  15

Title:   USING INLACE RESINS

CLASS FULL

Instructor:  Betsey Sloan

Description:  Students will first learn how to reduce and polish a pre-dried InLace resin design on a gourd scrap.  They will then wood-burn a simple design on the gourd provided, power carve two areas to accept InLace (color choices available) and inset the InLace resin.  Students will leave class with the resin wet and will finish the project at their  leisure.

Cost  of class:  $47   (students will receive mandrels, buffing and polishing compound, rag wheels, sanding products and all materials required to use InLace resin).

Instructor will furnish:  Gourd scrap with InLace, cleaned whole gourd, InLace, all materials required to inset and polish the resin, extension cords.

Student needs to bring:  Protective glasses and mask, power carver with small and medium ball tips, wood-burner (although I have 3 to share) , and extra extension cord with a multi-plug if you have one.  Bring a jacket.  We may work outside part of the time.

Title:  PASTING FUN ON A GOURD

Instructor:   Billie Strickland

Description:  Use Decorative Paste to make a dimensional design on a gourd.

Cost of class:  $25

Instructor will furnish:  A gourd, paints, pattern, photo and decorating supplies (paste and use of decorating tubes.)

Student needs to bring:  Water container, paper towels, masking tape and a small flat brush.

Maximum # of students:  15

Title:  JUST A SWEET GOURD BASKET

Title: BUNNY ESCAPE

Description:  This cute bunny was painted with Genesis Oils, which is heat set.  We will dry it as we go and there is not odor with Genesis.

Title: BEADED GOURD KEY RING   

Instructor:  Tina Norford

Description:  Let’s make jewelry for your car!!  These beaded key rings are fun and easy to make.  We will decorate the gourd using either wax resist, wood-burning or dying...your choice.  Then we will do the beading using a wrap method that will guarantee the beads and gourd will never come apart.  The same technique can be used to make necklaces.

Cost of class:  $35

Instructor will furnish:   Gourds, wire, beads, beading tools, wax resist supplies and dyes.  If you want to wood-burn the gourd, bring your wood-burner.  You get to keep the set of three beading pliers and case.

Student needs to bring:  Wood-burner if you choose to wood-burn your gourd.

Title:  CARVED ZEBRA

Instructor:  Judy Poulson

Description:  In this class, you will apply the zebra patterns, carve out the stripes and apply inks to the carved areas.

Instructor will furnish:  A gourd, a pattern and the inks.

Student needs to bring:  A power carving tool ( such as a dremel etc), and some tiny paintbrushes.

Title:  WHIMSICAL CARVED FISH

CLASS FULL

Instructor:  Debbie Wilson

Description:  This whimsical fish carved with a rotary tool on a black dyed gourd has at least 3 textural applications.  The top is finished with 3 pieces of twisted reed in two colors and coiled on top with waxed linen thread.

Cost of class:  $35

Instructor will furnish:  I will furnish all gourds, cut cleaned and dyed, all reed, needles, waxed linen, small dental bits for use during class .  I will also have patterns.

Student needs to bring:  Bucket or container  for water, Dremel or rotary tool, The Keyless Chuck (Dremel 4486) will eliminate the need for wrenches and collets! It will accept all accessory bits with 1/32" to 1/8" shanks. They work with Dremel models 275, 285, 395, 398, 750, 770, and 780. Also use with Dremel attachments and flexible shafts 212, 225, 575, and 961. OR collets which hold the different size shafts.  Small engraving bits (I will provide some small dental burs to use during class) OR  # 118 which has a 1/8” shaft (Dremel) OR#7103 Dremel which has a 5/64 shaft, two clothespins, old shirt or apron, or towel,  scissors or reed clippers, and a sharp pencil.

Title:  DANCING DOLPHINS & MARCHING MOOSE

Instructor:  Fonda Haddad

Description:  In this class you will do a  repeated design that is created and cut so that the lid fits back down on the base and is part of the overall design.  Participants will learn how to lay out and cut the design.  You may clean out the inside of the gourd or save that for later.  The outside will be painted or stained depending on the design.  The function of this class is to learn how to cut a lid to utilize the look of the whole gourd.

Cost of class:  $40

Instructor will furnish:  Gourds, saws, designs,  graphite paper, spray paint (inside of gourd), paints and stains.

Student needs to bring:  A saw if you have one, cleaning tools  (for the inside), dust mask, paint brushes, apron and wood-burners.

CLASS FULL

Title:  FISHNET GOURD 

Instructor:  Fran Minshew

Description:  Participants will learn how to do the fishnet design using artificial sinew and waxed linen in three different areas on a gourd vessel.  Each participant will receive a medium-sized gourd, cleaned, cut and prepared (wood-burned, dyed, and holes drilled for the fishnet technique).  No painting, wood-burning or leather dying will be done in class, although an instructional handout will be provided to each student covering how to prepare the gourd.  The hand-out will also include instructions on how to add a pine needle rim and embellishments.

Cost of class:  $40

Title: Bark and Reed with a Braided Beaded Border

Instructor:  Marianne Barnes

Description: Participants will learn how to triple twine with colored reed and weave cedar bark in the gourd basket. The rim is a braided border with a unique way of adding beads. This is a fun and easy gourd basket to make.

Cost of class: $45

Instructor will furnish gourd and weaving materials. Students need to bring a small bucket to soak reed and bark and scissors.

Title:  GOURD ON DISPLAY

 Instructor:  Laraine Short

Description: A fun way to try the new Eco-Flo water based dyes by Tandy, we will use 12 different colors. We will first burn the top of the gourd in 12 sections, then fill in with circles and lines, easy for beginners (no shading). The center section has a copper metallic design painted on it and the lower section is painted with copper metallic paint. A designer style is obtained with a copper wire and beads swirled around the top. Come join the fun.

Cost: $39

I will supply gourd, 13” copper stand, wire, beads, dyes, paints, instructions and all painting and dying supplies.

Students need to bring: Burner with an XL ball tip and needle nose pliers. I have a couple extra burners, if you need to use one please contact me before the retreat.

Title:  WOODBURNING A TREE FROG

Instructor:  Kathy James

Description:  Great class for beginners and intermediate pyrographers, alike. Learn some basics, practice useful techniques, burn a PyroPaper tree frog, then learn various techniques of shading and adding texture. Your design can be as simple or as complex as you wish. Helpful color handouts and extra PyroPaper designs provided.

Cost of class: $29

Title: Kumihimo for Gourds

Instructor: Kathy James

Description: This is a very easy-to-learn braiding process performed on a special foam disk, imitating centuries-old Japanese cord braiding. You will practice the moves and then select colorful cords and yarns for your first project. Guidance on how to use the finished cords as elegant gourd coiling, gourd necklace cords, purse handles, belts, etc. Handouts and history included. New addictive hobby! Easy to teach to others.

Cost of class: $33

Instructor will furnish: Student takes home a complete $16 kit (Kumihimo disk, eight bobbins, practice cord, several pages of color instructions, cord/yarn for a necklace cord).

Student needs to bring: favorite scissors.
