The classes for this year are listed below.  Please read the descriptions carefully and make a list of the things you need to bring to each class.  Please check the times so that you do not duplicate classes in one time slot.

TITLE OF CLASS     Faux Copper Gourd

DESCRIPTION OF CLASS Student will learn to apply a faux copper finish to a gourd with a clay design already applied and dried. Student will learn to apply a clay design to a gourd and complete it with a faux copper finish.

 WHAT WILL THE INSTRUCTOR FURNISH Student gets: 1 copper canyon gourd with lid and air dry clay design ready for finish, 1 egg gourd with eye screw, clay, 1 bottle each of copper, green, black paint, sponges, gloves in kit. I will furnish glue, clear finish, brushes for class use.

TITLE OF CLASS†: Antique Earthen Vessel

DESCRIPTION OF CLASS:   We will be creating an old looking vessel with medallions and textures.  Using a bowl or open bottle shaped gourd we will divide the surface into bands and textures with repeated shapes.  The medallions may be sunk into the gourd or left protruding depending on student wishes to carve out the background, either works fine.  The vessel will then be aged with paint, texture and metallics.

TITLE OF CLASS: Gourd Pot Pourri Holder w/ Teneriffe Lid

 DESCRIPTION OF CLASS:  Learn Teneriffe needle weaving on a wire ring and make a lid from your creation with pine needle coiling to attach to a small gourd.  Finish off the gourd with pine needles to hold the lid.  While you may not get finished with this project in class you will leave with all the skills needed for both needle weaving and shaping pine needle coils.

COST OF CLASS: $30.00

INSTRUCTOR WILL FURNISH:  I'll bring everything needed for the class.  The gourds will not be dyed or waxed, if someone wants to bring a colored one they can bring their own but it should be small and have holes drilled around the top about 3/4 inch apart.

Title of Class:  Cleo The Cow Birdhouse

DESCRIPTION OF CLASS:  We will be adding a clay head, arms and legs to a gourd body to make a cow birdhouse.  Clay will be wrapped around an aluminum foil ball for the head and we’ll also use some foil for the inside of the arms and legs.  After the clay and gourd has been baked, we’ll be painting the cow white and adding some black spots.        

Cost of Class:  $37.00

What will the Instructor furnish: I will supply everything to make the birdhouse.

What the Student need to bring:  Please bring your own paint brushes.

TITLE OF CLASS: Flashy Peacock

DESCRIPTION OF CLASS: Intermediate or advance students only to relief carve an art deco peacock into a gourd and finish with either gold leaf and/or Gourdmaster metallic inks.   The background will be painted with acrylic paint.  We will be using the heat activated glue and “simple” leaf Mona Lisa sheets.

 COST OF CLASS $42.00

 WHAT WILL THE INSTRUCTOR FURNISH: Acrylic paint, heat gun. Hairdryer, ink applicators, ink, glue, and “simple leaf”

 WHAT THE STUDENT NEEDS TO BRING; Dremel type tool with flexible attachment, burrs: inverted cone, small wheel, round burr; thick upright gourd – cut or uncut, paint brushes and water container, red ball point pen.

TITLE OF CLASS:  Polymer Clay Leaves

DAY & TIME:  Friday 7pm-9:30pm (This is a 2 part class.  The second part will be after the auction on Saturday night and will last about an hour)

DESCRIPTION OF CLASS: Learn the basics of making a colorful Sculpey Clay cane and slicing it to cover an  gourd egg with overlapping leaves or petals. Or make several bouquets on scraps instead, for pendants. Create your masterpiece(s) in class and take it home to easily bake in your home oven. Egg gourd provided. Great handouts.

COST OF CLASS:  $27.00

THE INSTRUCTOR WILL FURNISH: All supplies furnished except 3 packages of Sculpey Clay. Instructor will have other colors for trade or purchase.

THE STUDENT SHOULD BRING:  Bring 3 colors of Sculpey Clay (black, white, lime, yellow, or purple) or buy from instructor for $2 each.

TITLE OF CLASS: Not Your Usual Gourd Jewelry

DESCRIPTION OF CLASS: Students will learn some new tricks for making beautiful, one-of-a-kind gourd jewelry. Inlay not quite right? No problem. We can fix that!!  Tired of woodburned designs?  We can fix that, too.  Make a necklace or pin as original as yourself.  All components, beads, sterling/gold/copper wire and findings provided. If you have jewelry tools (cutter, pliers) please bring them, but mark them as your own first.  A relaxing, creative way to spend a few hours.

COST OF CLASS: $37.00

TITLE OF CLASS. Shell and Rope Luminary.

 DAY & TIME: Friday : 6:30pm-10:pm

DESCRIPTION OF CLASS:  We will stain or dye a gourd bowl, measure and cut vertical slices and weave a soft rope around 2/3 height of bowl. Coil the rim with rope and attach Scallop Shells around the gourd.  They will install a light kit which I will provide and attach small feet for the bowl.

 COST OF CLASS: $35.00

 WHAT WILL THE INSTRUCTOR FURNISH:  I will furnish, dye, stain, or ink , light kit , feet, rope and shells, and of course a tutorial.

 WHAT WILL STUDENT NEED TO BRING.:  bring a cut gourd bowl about 10 in high and 10 to12 inches across.  These will be available to purchase from turkey Branch Gourds at the retreat center.

TITLE OF CLASS: Antler With Freestyle Pine Needles Coiling

DESCRIPTION OF CLASS: Learn to attach an antler to the gourd with pine needle coiling.  The student will have a choice of a simple style or an advanced style, as shown in the photos.  The choice will depend on experience.

THE INSTRUCTOR WILL FURNISH: A gourd, an antler, pine needles, waxed linen, needle and instructions.

THE STUDENT SHOULD BRING: A spray bottle for water.

Title of Class:  Henrietta the Hen Bird House

DESCRIPTION OF CLASS: We will be adding a clay head, arms and legs to a gourd body to make a
chicken birdhouse.  Clay will be wrapped around an aluminum foil ball for
the head and we'll also use some foil for the inside of the legs.  After the
clay and gourd has been baked we'll be painting the chicken and adding the
highlights.  The only difference from the picture shown will be that we'll
be adding gourd seeds as feathers for the wings..

COST OF CLASS:  $37.00

WHAT WILL THE INSTRUCTOR FURNISH:
The instructor will furnish all supplies to make the birdhouse.

Title of Class: Carved Ginkgo Leaves

DESCRIPTION OF CLASS:  Carved Ginkgo Leaves -  We will be carving  ginkgo leaves  and learning more detail techniques for a more Professional look.  The gourd itself is sponged and trimmed with gold leafing.  If time does not allow you to finish, Laraine will be available after the Auction on Saturday night to help.

 COST OF CLASS... $52.00

WHAT WILL THE INSTRUCTOR FURNISH

I will furnish pictures, instructions, design, paints, all painting supplies, transferring supplies, sandpaper and gold leafing supplies.

 WHAT THE STUDENT NEEDS TO BRING

Mask or respirator a must

Rotary carver, burrs (coned shaped), small sanding drum, diamond burrs (cone shaped), saw, x-acto knife and a cleaned gourd bowl.  Gourd finished size is approximately 7” by 7”.    The top leaf is above the curve on a bottle or martin gourd, we will cut this in class.  Cleaned and cut gourds will be available to purchase from C. L. of Turkey branch Gourds. Some burrs and sanding drums will be available to purchase during class.

TITLE OF CLASS   Oriental Round

INSTRUCTOR:  Debbie Wilson       artbasgo@yahoo.com

DAY & TIME: Saturday 8:30am -12 noon

DESCRIPTION OF CLASS  We will use cannonball type gourds for this class. Our theme is oriental inspired with lines and circles in a continuous pattern. The reed top has been coiled around with 2 pieces lashed on as further decoration. The color of the gourd will be in the range of reddish browns and deep mahogany. It will be over dyed with the lighter color underneath to peek through with the carving lines, creating more dimension.

 COST OF CLASS.....$35.00

 WHAT WILL THE INSTRUCTOR FURNISH:  I will furnish all gourds, cut and dyed, pattern instruction sheets. I usually have some extra dental burrs that students may use. I will also bring white or light colored pencils and rulers.

 WHAT THE STUDENT NEEDS TO BRING Rotary carving tool with a universal adapter. Very small round head burrs or small straight burrs, or dental burrs. If you have a rotary carver that has collets , it is very important that you have the right size to hold the 3/32 burrs. You may also want to bring an apron or old shirt to work in and a slip mat

TITLE OF CLASS:  Triple Twine with Darts

DESCRIPTION OF CLASS: I will teach you how to do a basket weaving technique called triple twine or three rod whale. We will use that technique and color to add darts in order to create the design. We will add a row of arrows and end with a simple braided border. We will not do the wood burned design, but I will have a pattern to give you.

COST OF CLASS: $45

WHAT WILL THE INSTRUCTOR FURNISH: Gourds, dyed reed, pattern

WHAT THE STUDENT NEEDS TO BRING: bucket for soaking reed, spray bottle, awl (or flat screwdriver), and scissors

Title of Class: Butterfly House

Day & Time:  Saturday 8:30am -12 noon

Description: Spring is in the air and the butterflies are helping flowers bloom.  Let’s make them feel right at home with this cute butterfly house.  We will cut out the slots and paint the house, and add a couple of friends to make the butterflies feel welcome!

Cost of Class:  $27.00

Instructor will furnish: Gourd, gourd cut out, paints, glue, clear coat, hanger and anything you do not have in the “should bring” section above. I have a few knives for cutting, plus I will bring my gourd saw.

 Students MUST bring:  #3, #4, #7, #9 round paint brushes, #5/0 liner brush, #12 flat brush (all brushes must be in very good condition), a gourd saw or utility knife or X-Acto knife to cut slots, water container to clean brushes.

Students SHOULD bring:  Palette paper, a few sheets of paper towels, tracing paper, transfer paper, charcoal pencil, ink pen, pencil, scissors, eraser and tape.

Title of Class:  Chef Ebenezer

Description:  In this class you will paint a chef with acrylic paints, add a gourd chef hat and bring to life your own personal assistant.  Chef Ebenezer will create smiles for all who enter your kitchen.

Cost of Class:  $32.00

Instructor will Furnish:  Everything will be furnished for this class.

Students Should Bring: Please bring your own acrylic paint brushes and painting supplies..... paper towels, water container, paper plate or palette.

TITLE OF CLASS: “Raccoon in the headlights”

DESCRIPTION OF CLASS: Create a cute raccoon from two gourds, modeling features using apoxy sculpt or Quickwood, and finishing with acrylic paints.

 WHAT WILL THE INSTRUCTOR FURNISH:  The instructor will furnish two gourds already glued together to form the body and tail, as well as furnish the epoxy clays, sculpting tools, hair dryer, glue, and paints.

 WHAT THE STUDENT NEEDS TO BRING: The student should bring a water container and paint brushes.  Additional hair dryers would be appreciated.

TITLE OF CLASS:     The Whimsical wood-burned Giraffe

DAY & TIME:  Saturday 1pm-5:00pm

DESCRIPTION OF CLASS:  Make a fun whimsical giraffe using a very small bottle gourd and a medium long neck gourd, putting the two together to form the giraffe; they will be attached with a little quickwood.  With paper clay or Quickwood we will form the nose, eyebrows and feet.  The eyes can be painted or wood burned, the ears and tail will be of leather, the horns will be small dowels with quickwood to form the knobs.  The spots will all be wood burned and the entire gourd will be over dyed.  .  The student might not get all the spots woodburned on but the basic giraffe will be complete in that time frame.  

COST OF CLASS: $35.00

INSTRUCTORS WILL FURNISH: We will furnish the gourds and all supplies and instructions.

STUDENTS SHOULD BRING:  the student will need to bring a wood burner and the pens or nibs they prefer to work with.

Title of Class:  Lidded Gourd With Wax Resist

Description of Class: In this class you will learn to cut a bowl and make a design using a Kistka and wax.

What the Student need to bring:  A gourd, small, Hershey kiss shaped.  It should be cleaned but uncut.

Title of class: Cat in a Jack-o-lantern

DESCRIPTION OF CLASS: This class teaches the basics of Jack-o-lantern.  This cute guy has a cat stuck down inside of him, looking out, with only his tail and hiney sticking out.  Cute and different.

 COST OF CLASS: $27.00

Instructor will provide all materials  including gourd,  dye and other paints.

Students should bring a pencil, mini jigsaw and dremel.  I will have a few saws to share.

TITLE OF CLASS:   GOURDIVA CHICKEN – Picture is the Office Gourdiva with her cup of JAVA.

DESCRIPTION OF CLASS  Students will complete a 12-18 inch Gourdiva Chicken gourd with PERSONALITY PLUS and a sexy figure to boot.  Each student will paint their chicken in a variety of colors of their choice and use a variety of techniques to add special patterns to the painting.   Quikwood will be used to complete the face, wings and legs.  Additionally embellishments will also be available for students to put the “finishing extras” on their chicken for that final personality.  Students need to supply their own paint brushes and they can bring their embellishments if they have something special they want to use.

TITLE OF CLASS: Carved Zuni Bear with Fine Art Metal                 

                                 Coating and Patina

INSTRUCTOR:Judy Richie  judyrichie@yahoo.com

DAY & TIME:  Sunday 8:30-12 noon

DESCRIPTION OF CLASS: Learn a technique of applying a Fine Art Metal Coating and patina on a carved Zuni Bear.  The student will inlay a Turquoise cabochon on the bear and heishe beads around the rim.  The rest of the gourd will be stained.

COST OF CLASS: $62

INSTRUCTOR WILL FURNISH: A craft ready gourd, Turquoise Cabochon and heishe beads, stain, sandpaper, steel wool, Lacquer spray and instructions.

STUDENT SHOULD BRING: a Rotary tool, such as a Dremel, small ball cutter burr, inverted cone burr, and a large cylind3r cutter along with other burrs the student might have.  Also bring a dust mask, which is required.

Title of Class:  Light The Way

DESCRIPTION OF CLASS:  You will learn how to cut and make a gourd luminary.  The outside of the gourd has an inked finish and a sprayed varnish.  You will learn how to weave a seagrass rim on the lid for a nice fit.  I will have several colors and patterns for you to choose from.

 WHAT WILL THE INSTRUCTOR FURNISH

I will furnish pictures, instructions, designs, ink, all inking supplies, sandpaper, transferring supplies, seagrass and weaving supplies. Also a bead for the top.

Cleaned gourd approximately 6” wide and 7”tall, lid cut off and inside cleaned.  A gourd cutting saw and drill.
