LEOPARD, PEN & INK WITH OIL PASTELS

Students will transfer a design using graphite paper. They will then go over the design with India ink using a dip pen. Spots can be colored in with dip pen or fine point permanent pen. Oil pastels will be used to add color and highlights. Handouts provided.

Required Supply List: one medium-sized Martin house gourd, India ink and dip pen (or rapidograph pen), and set of oil pastels (12).

For a $2.00 fee, you may borrow the tools and other supplies from the instructor. You still need to supply your own gourd.

CREATIVE WEAVING WITH RUSH

Students will dye their gourds if they wish, using The Gourd Dye. Then they will learn how to weave simple coils and techniques for adding yarns, beads, and loops. Lots of fun!

Required Supply List: scissors, gourd bowl cleaned and cut any way you like (see photo; we can elaborate on cuts if needed, in class), waxed linen, at least 6 yards of paper rush, spray sealer (inexpensive is fine), any yarns/ribbons/beads for fun. Feel free to bring dangles, seeds, shells, or jewelry parts you would like to incorporate into the design.

For the students’ convenience, the instructor will have paper rush (10 yards for $1.00, funky yarns for $1.00, and miscellaneous beads. Waxed linen cord in many colors and spray sealer are available from a vendor.

BOMBS AWAY!

We will prepare a bomber gourd by sanding the gourd surface, then chip carving your chosen design. The techniques for chip carving will be discussed. One bomber gourd, sandpaper, and instruction sheet will be provided, and polish will be available. Additional gourds will be available to purchase and take home. Handout available.

Required Supply List: a compass (adjustable drawing tool that makes circles), sturdy protective glove (for the hand NOT holding the sharp tools), and a wood gouge (#11 x 3/16”) are necessary. Also ,techniques using a #11 x 1/8” gouge will be covered, so if you have it, bring that gouge also (or purchase onsite). 

Gouges in those sizes and Kevlar carving gloves are available from the vendor at the event or online at PrimitiveOriginals.com or at wood crafting stores. Compasses are available at most office supply stores.
